Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences & Technology (SCTIMST) was established in the year 1976. It was declared an Institute of National Importance in 1980. The University is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC), but not funded by it. It is a member of The Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

SCTIMST, Thiruvananthapuram is an Institute of National Importance for providing training in health sciences. The Institute was established under an Act of Parliament is an autonomous body and comes under administrative control of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
